What is HoLEP surgery?

HoLEP uses holmium laser energy to separate enlarged prostate tissue from its capsule and remove it completely, without any open incision. It is the most up-to-date operation available for an enlarged prostate, and its advantages over other methods made it popular across Europe and the United States within a short time. Urology guidelines now list it as the gold-standard treatment.

What does HoLEP stand for?

HoLEP stands for “Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate” — separating the enlarged inner prostate tissue (the adenoma) from its capsule with a laser and removing it.

How is HoLEP surgery performed?

The procedure is carried out through the urinary channel with an endoscope, so no incision is made. The enlarged prostate tissue is carefully separated from its capsule with the laser and released into the bladder. From there it is broken into very small pieces with an instrument called a morcellator and removed from the body. A catheter is placed, and once the procedure is complete the removed tissue is sent to pathology for examination.

Who is HoLEP surgery suitable for?

HoLEP is an endoscopic (closed) technique used to treat benign prostatic enlargement. It is suitable for anyone who needs prostate surgery. Because the whole of the tissue inside the capsule is removed, the risk of the condition recurring is almost nil — and the technique can be applied to a prostate of any size.
