What Men Should Know About Masturbation

Masturbation is a sexual activity that reduces stress and helps keep the sperm production cycle running regularly — yet myths about it can leave men uneasy. The sensitivity of the subject and the misconceptions surrounding it have made masturbation in men something of a taboo. In this article I will try to fill in the gaps in what is known about it, and offer parents some pointers on how to approach adolescent boys.

Masturbation Is a “Normal” Activity

Although it is treated as taboo, and was once perceived as a sign of mental illness, masturbation is today accepted as a normal and even healthy act. Studies show that people who masturbate experience less stress, sleep more easily, have milder headaches, higher self-confidence and improved concentration.

Masturbation Does Not Affect Sperm Count

Masturbation does not lower sperm count in men. Sperm production continues cyclically, so a man’s sperm count is not reduced by masturbation. Likewise, the view that masturbation causes male infertility has no scientific value.

Masturbation Is Not Equivalent to Intercourse

Masturbation and intercourse cannot be described as equivalent. Intercourse improves men’s general health, whereas the effects of masturbation are not considered as far-reaching. The male body distinguishes between the two activities — even the properties of the semen produced after each are not identical. That said, I would also note that there is research suggesting masturbation may improve prostate health.

Masturbation Is Not Entirely Without Risk

Although masturbation is accepted as the safest sexual activity, in some circumstances it can lead to unexpected outcomes. Men who increase the frequency may irritate the skin, and forceful movements during masturbation can lead to the traumatic condition known as penile fracture. Being aware of these risks helps prevent unwanted outcomes.

There Is No Ideal Number

A sexually active man needs to ejaculate at least three times a week for his sperm production cycle to continue. Men without a regular sex life can maintain that cycle through masturbation. There is no fixed limit for men, but a balance still needs to be struck. Repeating the act very frequently is known to carry a risk of withdrawing a person from social life, and of creating a dependency that cools their interest in sexual relationships.

Masturbation Is Not a Sign That a Relationship Is Failing

The myth with the most damaging consequences is that the need to masturbate reflects problems in an emotional relationship. Attaching emotional meaning to masturbation is not the right approach: many men choose to masturbate and do not do so for emotional reasons. Performed at times to relieve stress, to reduce sexual tension, or to sleep more easily afterwards, masturbation should not be read as a harbinger of disaster for a relationship or a marriage.

Masturbation Does Not Cause Erection Problems

The view that a person who masturbates will develop erection problems does not reflect scientific reality. However, it should not be ignored that men who masturbate constantly, and who begin to see it as the only route to sexual satisfaction, may lose interest in their sexual partners. Frequency should therefore be judged sensibly so that the possible side effects of the activity are avoided.

Adolescent Boys May Masturbate

If you have a child entering adolescence, remember that trying to make sense of their physical changes is normal behaviour. Around 80% of adolescent boys explore their bodies through masturbation and become acquainted with orgasm and the feeling of sexual satisfaction. Parents need to approach their children with understanding during this period. Providing general information about sexuality — without intruding on their privacy and without making them feel guilty — is an approach specialists support.
